What Is Ring Figure and Why Is it Special?

The Ring Figure celebration is a cherished tradition at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI). It marks a significant milestone for cadets in their junior year, known as "Second Class" cadets. This event, typically held in November, involves the presentation of the VMI class ring, symbolizing the cadet's commitment and journey at the Institute. The ring is unique to each class and features symbols and designs representing the cadets' experiences and values.
The tradition of receiving a class ring dates back to 1848, when members of the Class of 1848 designed the first VMI ring. The word "Mizpah," meaning "the Lord watch between me and thee," was inscribed on the ring, signifying the enduring connection among the graduates. The custom of second-class cadets receiving the ring was established in 1907, and the Ring Figure dance was added in 1927, making it one of the grandest events in the VMI calendar.
The Ring Figure celebration includes the formal presentation of the rings, followed by the Ring Figure Ball, a grand dance where cadets celebrate this milestone with their peers, family, and friends. This event is considered one of the most important moments in a cadet's journey, second only to graduation. The elaborate celebration and the unique design of each ring continue to honor the tradition and the sense of brotherhood among VMI cadets.
